BAYFIELD, CO – On July 16th, 2009 at 07:49 AM, the Upper Pine Fire District was dispatched to US Highway 160 at the 107 mile marker for a report of a two-vehicle motor vehicle accident with multiple injuries. First arriving units encountered a head-on accident with one fatality and one critical patient. Under command of Lieutenant Adolph Young, UPFD personnel secured the hazards on the vehicles and readied the critical patient for transport.
The patient was flown off the scene by the Care Flight 3 helicopter out of Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. The incident closed the highway for approximately three hours. The Honda Station Wagon was traveling westbound on the highway when the Jeep Cherokee drifted across the center lane, striking the Honda head-on. The driver of the Honda was killed.
12 UPFD personnel operated at the scene. Also working on the scene were the LaPlata County Sherriff’s Office, the Bayfield Marshal’s Office, and the Colorado State Patrol. The accident is being investigated by the State Patrol.
