BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ - Just before 1:00 a.m. on January 10, 2010 the Manitou Park Fire Company, station 18 and the Pinewald Pioneer Fire Company, station 20, were alerted to a reported structure fire located at 260 Fort De France Avenue in the Holiday City section of Berkeley Township. The Ocean County Radio Room advised first responding Chief 1800 that the police officer on location had a fully involved structure with all people accounted for. Chief 1800 requested a FAST team be dispatched from station 16, the Beachwood Fire Company.
The first due engine stretched a hand line and an additional hand line was stretched for exposure protection on the bravo side of the structure. A third line was stretch to the rear of the structure to attempt to make an aggressive interior attack on the structure through the rear door.
The interior crew was unable to make headway and was met with deteriorating conditions. Due to these conditions the interior crews were forced to evacuate the structure and exterior suppression efforts were established.
Tower Ladder 2525 was requested from the Toms River Fire Company #1 to help assist in these suppression efforts.
The firefighters were able to knock down the bulk of the fire and then begin overhaul operations. Crews spent a few hours on the scene in below freezing temperatures, bringing the fire under control.
Also responding was MONOC EMS, Ocean County Fire Coordinator and the Ocean County Fire Marshal.
The fire remains under investigation.
