Structure Fire, 2 alarm fire with fatalities – Manville, NJ
On Monday March 12 2007 at approximately 11:45 pm The Manville Fire Department was dispatched to a confirmed working structure fire with entrapment on South 5th Ave. A second alarm was then requested. Chief John Yanko, along with Assistant Chief James Monto were on scene within 3 minutes of the call and observed the entire A and B side of the structure completely engulfed in flames. At the same time, Chief Yanko observed a man carrying a young child, both covered in black soot, from the rear of the structure. Prepared to perform CPR, Chief’s Yanko and Monto noticed the child had regained consciousness. The child was brought to paramedics and was transported to the hospital along with his father.
Shortly after the Chief’s arrival, Tower 42 arrived on scene and took position in front of the structure. As other companies arrived, officials confirmed entrapment of other residents and the order was given to the truck company to perform search and rescue operations on the back second floor. As Firefighters were entering the second floor bedroom window, the fire began to spread towards the rear of the structure and thick black smoke was pushing out the windows with fingers of flames in the smoke. Chief Yanko observed the signs of a possible flashover and ordered ALL firefighters out of the structure.
A few moments later, the entire 2nd floor along with most of the 1st floor, were completely engulfed in flames. The rapid spread of the fire kept firefighters from reaching additional victims (1 adult and 2 young children) who perished in the fire.
The majority of the fire was brought under control at approx 12:30 am which permitted firefighters to advance through the second floor windows. Upon entering the 2nd floor, firefighters discovered that the front section of the 2nd floor had collapsed and that the rest of the floor was unstable. Another “evac” order was given, and all firefighters exited the structure. The victims were located on the collapsed section of the 2nd floor in the front of the home where the fire was most intense. Companies were on scene throughout the morning and most of the following day.
Mutual aid and support was provided by several neighboring fire departments. Hillsborough, Finderne, Elizabeth Avenue, Millstone, Somerville and the Manville and Hillsborough Rescue Squads.
