The Suffolk County Sheriff's K-9 Unit gives a demonstration
The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office has teamed up with local Volunteer Fire Departments and the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshals Office to help the youth in Suffolk County. The firefighters and Fire Marshals lectured about fire safety and fire awareness. Tours of fire and EMS apparatus were conducted and the kids were shown various tools and equipment firefighters and EMS personnel use during emergency situations.
Sheriff Vincent DeMarco has assigned Deputy Sheriff’s and Correction Officers to the G.R.E.A.T. Unit. That unit has conducted its first series of summer camps in cooperation with local youth organizations. Sheriff DeMarco has shown great interest in the youth of Suffolk County especially in steering them away from gang related activities.
The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) summer program builds on the school-based curriculum by offering students an opportunity to enhance their social skills, giving them alternatives to gang involvement, and adding structure to the summer months. The goal is to provide students with positive activities to relieve the boredom over the summer months and increase their opportunities for social, cognitive, and interpersonal growth. It is administered in the County by the Sheriff’s office.
