BAYFIELD, CO – On March 11, 2010 at 10:24 p.m., Upper Pine Fire District firefighters were dispatched to 39743 Highway 160 East on a report of a head-on collision. The crash was located on a stretch of Highway 160 that runs through the Gem Village area of Bayfield.
Units arrived to find a two vehicle accident that occurred between a pick-up truck and a compact car. Firefighters from Rescue 61 and Medic 61 went to work on a critical patient that was located in the compact vehicle.
Another patient that received minor injuries was treated by personnel on Medic 62, the second due ambulance. Both Medic Units transported their patients to Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango.
Traffic was diverted to the frontage road during operations.
Remaining crews assessed the vehicles for hazards and stood by until they were removed from the scene. Witnesses reported that one of the vehicles swerved to avoid a deer on the highway, and the incident is under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol.
